For your application, yes: PMI accepts self-paced, on-demand training from any organisation toward the 35 hours. For the exam, it depends on how you study. The 35 hours let you apply. They do not tell you whether you are ready.
The short answer
If you study well on your own and already work on projects, a self-paced course plus a good question bank can be enough. If you need a schedule, someone to explain why your answer was wrong, or help with your application, a live class usually earns its price.
What PMI requires
35 hours of project management training before you apply, from any eligible course or provider. It can be live, in person or virtual, or on demand. An active CAPM covers it too. The hours sit beside the experience requirement and never replace it. Our 35 contact hours guide covers what counts.

Self-paced is enough if
You keep a study schedule without anyone checking on you. You already lead projects, so the situational questions describe work you recognise. You add a full practice question bank and timed mock exams, because the course hours alone will not show you how the exam reads.
A live class is worth it if
You learn by asking. PMP questions give you a situation and ask for the next action, and several answers look reasonable: an instructor can show you why the best one wins. You have started online courses before and not finished them. You want your application reviewed before PMI sees it. Or you want material built for the July 2026 exam, where Business Environment rose from 8% to 26% of the paper.
What changes on 1 December 2026
From that date, live class hours count only if the course is delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced courses can still come from any organisation, and training completed before 1 December 2026 stays eligible. So the risk after December is a cheap live class from an unauthorised provider, not a self-paced course. Our post on the December 2026 rule has the detail.

What to check before you buy
Whether the course is self-paced or live, and if live, whether the provider is an Authorized Training Partner. What certificate you receive and what it records. Whether practice questions and full mock exams are included or sold separately. Whether the material was updated for the July 2026 exam. Our live PMP course runs over seven Saturdays, in person in Mississauga or online, and gives you 60 contact hours, more than the 35 PMI asks for. As ATP #4456, our hours count before and after 1 December.
Frequently asked questions
- 01
Do self-paced PMP courses count toward the 35 hours?
Yes. PMI says self-paced courses can be taken from any organisation, and that stays true after 1 December 2026.
- 02
Can I pass the PMP with only a 35-hour course?
The hours qualify you to apply; they are not a readiness test. Before you book, work through practice questions and at least one timed, full-length mock exam.
- 03
Will my 35 hours still count after 1 December 2026?
Training completed before 1 December 2026 stays eligible under PMI's current rules. After that date, live hours need an Authorized Training Partner, a China REP or an eligible academic provider.
- 04
Is a live PMP class worth the extra cost?
It is if you need a schedule, real-time answers or help with your application. If you study well alone, a self-paced course and a good question bank may be enough.
Education Edge is a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP #4456). Every course is live and instructor-led, and selected courses carry a 100% pass guarantee or your money back.
