Understanding business analysis
20% of the exam, the largest domain. What the discipline is, who does it, and the vocabulary every other domain is written in.- What business analysis is, and what it is not
- Who performs it, and alongside whom
- The BABOK Guide: how it is structured
- The six knowledge areas, and what each covers
- Requirements and designs — the distinction the exam tests
Mindset for effective business analysis
14% of the exam. The habits IIBA expects of an analyst, which the scenario questions are really testing.- Analytical thinking and problem solving
- Behavioural characteristics of an effective analyst
- Communication and interaction skills
- Business knowledge, tools and technology
Implementing business analysis
6% of the exam — the smallest domain, and easy to over-study.- Planning the analysis approach
- Governance and information management
- Working across predictive and adaptive delivery
The six core concepts
Sixty per cent of the paper between them, ten per cent each: Change, Need, Solution, Stakeholder, Value and Context. IIBA's core concept model is the spine of the whole credential.- Change — the act of transformation, and what drives it
- Need — the problem or opportunity underneath it
- Solution — how a need is satisfied, and its limitations
- Stakeholder — who has a relationship to the change
- Value — the worth of something to a stakeholder
- Context — the circumstances the change sits inside
Techniques and elicitation
The named techniques an entry-level analyst is expected to recognise, and how requirements are drawn out of people.- Preparing for and conducting elicitation
- Confirming what you heard
- Tracing, maintaining and prioritising requirements
- Modelling and specifying requirements
- Measuring whether a solution delivered
Your application and exam day
The ECBA asks for no experience at all — it asks for 21 hours of professional development, which this course delivers.- Eligibility, and the 21 hours IIBA requires
- Completing the application
- Booking the exam
- Situation-based questions, and how they are built
- Full-length mocks, then a domain-by-domain review
Who it suits
This is for people moving into business analysis: career changers out of QA, support, operations or project coordination, recent graduates, and junior analysts who want a recognized signal before they have the hours. If you already have years of analysis work behind you, the ECBA understates it. CCBA or CBAP is the honest answer.
How to Apply for ECBA?
There is no application and no application fee. IIBA's roadmap goes straight to buying the exam. 1. Read IIBA's terms and its Code of Ethical Conduct. You accept both during the purchase. 2. Buy the exam from IIBA. The first year of IIBA membership is included in the price. 3. Your six-month term starts the day IIBA receives the payment.
The ECBA exam
Questions – 50, situation-based and standard multiple choice Time – 75 minutes Breaks – none. IIBA permits no break during the ECBA Delivery – online with a PSI proctor, never at a test center
How it is scored, and what IIBA does not publish
IIBA does not publish a passing score for the ECBA. Any figure you find is an estimate. You get performance indicators instead, which show you where you were weak. Pass or fail appears on screen when you finish, and IIBA emails confirmation within 48 hours. IIBA does not publish a pass rate, or how many people hold the credential.
There is nothing to renew
The ECBA does not expire. IIBA's recertification table records no term for it. No CDUs to log, no renewal fee, and no grace period to miss. CCBA, CBAP, AAC and CBDA all run on renewal cycles. The ECBA does not. Earn it once and it stays yours, though CCA and CPOA work the same way.
