Strategic alignment
25% of the exam, level with performance. A portfolio manager's job is deciding what the organisation funds — this domain is that decision.- Aligning the portfolio to organisational strategy
- Portfolio roadmaps and the strategic plan
- Evaluating and prioritising components
- Recommending what to fund, defer or stop
Portfolio performance
25% of the exam. Measuring whether the portfolio is delivering what it was funded to deliver.- Defining portfolio performance measures
- Capacity and capability planning
- Balancing the portfolio against constraints
- Value realisation across components
Governance
20% of the exam. The boards, gates and authority that sit above a portfolio.- Establishing the portfolio governance framework
- Portfolio oversight and decision rights
- Component selection and authorisation
- Reporting to executive stakeholders
Portfolio risk management
15% of the exam. Risk at portfolio level is not the sum of project risks.- Identifying portfolio-level risk
- Assessing aggregate exposure across components
- Portfolio risk response and tolerance
- Monitoring risk as the portfolio changes
Communications management
15% of the exam. Reporting upward to people who decide whether the portfolio continues.- Stakeholder analysis at executive level
- Portfolio communications planning
- Reporting performance and value
- Managing expectations across competing sponsors
Your application, panel review and exam
PfMP carries a panel review alongside the exam, and it is the step candidates most often fail.- Eligibility, and the portfolio experience PMI asks for
- Completing the application, and the PMI audit
- The panel review, and how responses are assessed
- Booking the exam
- Full-length practice, then a domain-by-domain review
Who should Apply?
If you are a Sr. project manager, Portfolio Manager, Program Manager, PMO staff, risk manager, functional manager or C-suite executive, PfMP certification is the way to go.
How to apply
1. Work out which route you are on, and add up your months of portfolio management experience. 2. Open your application in PMI's online system. It stays open for 90 days once you start it. 3. Write your experience summaries. PMI wants what you decided and what changed, not a list of duties. 4. Send them to us first. Months counted twice and operational work written up as portfolio work are what sink applications.
The exam
Questions – 170, multiple choice Scored – 150; the remaining 20 are unscored pretest items Time – 240 minutes Language – English only, with no language aids
What the questions are like
Scenario questions. You are given a portfolio situation and asked what you would do next, and more than one answer will usually look defensible. The exam is not written to any single book. PMI's own reference list names the Standard for Portfolio Management without an edition, and the blueprint behind the questions has been stable.
What PMI does and does not publish
No passing score. Any percentage you find quoted for one is somebody's estimate being repeated. No count of PfMP holders. The 1.5M+ figure on PMI's page covers all of its certifications. No exam fee. PMI says pricing varies by membership and by region, and states no amount. Ask us before you budget. No answer on breaks. PMI's current handbook ties them to exam length and never says where the PfMP falls.
How to stay PfMP certified?
PMI counts a PDU as an hour spent learning, teaching, presenting, reading, volunteering or creating content. Report your PDUs in PMI's online CCRS as you earn them, not at the end. There is no re-examination required to stay certified. During suspension you cannot use the logo or call yourself an active credential holder.
