Contracts management
50% of the exam. Half the paper is contracts — which is the single most important fact about this credential and the reason most candidates underestimate it.- Contract types used on construction projects
- Procurement and tendering
- Claims, variations and change orders
- Contract administration and close-out
- Dispute resolution
Stakeholder engagement
30% of the exam. Owners, contractors, consultants, regulators and the public — construction has more parties than most project environments.- Identifying stakeholders across the supply chain
- Engagement planning on a multi-party project
- Communication across contractors and consultants
- Managing conflict between parties with different contracts
Strategy and scope management
15% of the exam. Defining and holding scope on work where change is constant and expensive.- Aligning the project to the owner's strategy
- Defining and baselining scope
- Managing scope change in a built environment
- Interface management between work packages
Project governance
5% of the exam — the smallest domain, but the one that decides who can approve what.- Governance structures on capital projects
- Approval authority and delegation
- Reporting and assurance
Your application and exam day
The PMI-CP is earned across four courses and their assessments rather than one sitting.- Eligibility, and the construction experience PMI asks for
- The four courses, and how the assessments work
- Completing the application
- Full-length practice, then a domain-by-domain review
How to apply
1. Complete PMI's four required modules. They are self-paced and you may take them in any order. 2. Count your experience. Three years on construction or built environment projects, all of it inside the past 10 years. 3. Create a pmi.org account and complete PMI's application. It asks for your personal details and your project experience. 4. Submit. PMI selects a share of applications for audit at random and asks for proof of your experience.
The exam
PMI gives you a Pearson VUE test center or an online proctored sitting, and recommends the test center. There are one or more scheduled breaks. PMI does not publish how many, or how long, for this exam. PMI does not publish the question formats for the PMI-CP. Any breakdown you find elsewhere is not PMI's. Some items are unscored pretest questions. You are graded only on the scored ones, and you cannot tell which.
How to stay PMI-CP certified?
Your three-year cycle starts the day you pass, not the day the certificate arrives. Only PDUs earned in the final 12 months of a cycle carry forward, and only up to 10 of them. Renewal fees are not published. PMI sets them by membership and region and shows yours in the my.pmi.org dashboard. Payment is due no later than 90 days after your cycle ends.
