Risk identification
23% of the exam, level with analysis. Finding what could go wrong — and what could go unexpectedly right — before it does.- Running risk identification exercises
- Examining assumptions and constraints
- Documenting risk triggers and thresholds
- Building and maintaining the risk register
Risk analysis
23% of the exam. Sizing what you found, qualitatively and then with numbers.- Qualitative analysis: probability and impact
- Quantitative analysis, and when it is worth doing
- Distinguishing threats from opportunities
- Prioritising what actually needs a response
Risk strategy and planning
22% of the exam. The work before any risk is logged: appetite, thresholds, and the plan itself.- Preliminary document analysis
- Assessing the project environment for threats and opportunities
- Confirming risk thresholds against risk appetite
- Establishing the risk management strategy
- Documenting the risk management plan
Monitoring and closing risks
19% of the exam. Watching the register once the project is running and everyone is busy.- Gathering and analysing performance data
- Monitoring residual and secondary risks
- Updating project documents as risk changes
- Monitoring overall project risk levels
Risk response
13% of the exam — the smallest domain, and the one where doing nothing is sometimes the answer.- Planning responses to threats and to opportunities
- Implementing the response, and owning it
- Contingency and fallback plans
- Escalating risk outside your authority
Your application and exam day
The months of risk experience PMI asks for, and the paper itself.- Eligibility, and what counts as risk experience
- Completing the application, and the PMI audit
- Booking the exam
- Full-length mocks, then a domain-by-domain review
Who should Apply?
Three routes in, and every one of them also asks for formal risk management education. The months must be project risk management, not general project management, and they must fall inside the last five consecutive years. Unpaid work counts if it was professional. School projects and personal events do not. Work several projects at once and the months of risk work on every one of them count toward the total.
How to Apply?
1. Work out which of the three routes you are on, and count only risk management months. 2. Open the application at PMI. You have 90 days to finish it once you start. 3. Record your education hours. Our certificate covers PMI's requirement in full. 4. Submit. A share of applications are picked for audit at random.
The exam
Fifteen of the questions are unscored pretest items. The other 100 decide your result. Pretest items sit at random, and you will not know which they are. 150 minutes on the clock. The optional tutorial and survey sit outside it. One optional 10-minute break, offered after roughly 58 questions.
What the questions look like
Multiple choice with one answer, and multiple-answer select where more than one is right. Predictive, agile and hybrid approaches run through all five domains. None of the three is boxed off into a domain of its own. PMI says the mix of question types varies from one exam form to another.
How it is scored, and what PMI does not publish
PMI does not publish a passing score for the PMI-RMP. No percentage, no cut score, no number of correct answers. Any figure you find quoted for one is somebody's estimate being repeated. PMI publishes no count of PMI-RMP holders either, so treat any you see the same way.
Attempts, and the eligibility year
Your eligibility year starts once PMI approves the application and the fee is paid. If you are audited, it starts the day PMI tells you the audit passed. Three attempts inside that year. The second and third carry a retake fee. PMI does not publish the retake amount anywhere public.
How to stay RMP certified?
Your three-year cycle starts the day you pass, not the day you enroll. Renew at any point once the units are earned. Payment is due no later than 90 days after the cycle ends. Miss it and the credential is suspended for twelve months, and you cannot use the letters.
Why get RMP Certified?
Specialist, not general: PMI counts only project risk management months, so it says something a PMP does not. Seniority, not entry: PMI positions the PMI-RMP at three to five years of experience. Action, not hesitation: you learn to treat risk as a value enhancer, not only a value destroyer. Renewable, not re-sat: you keep it with professional development units rather than another exam.
