Who should apply?
Business analysts who own requirements on a project rather than advise on them. Requirements leads, systems analysts and product analysts inside a delivery team. Product owners and product managers who write and sign off requirements. Project managers who carry the requirements function themselves.
How to apply
1. Work out which set you are on, A, B or C, and total your months of business analysis work. 2. Create a PMI account and open the application. It stays open for 90 days once you start. 3. Enter each role separately: your dates, what you were responsible for, and the requirements you owned. 4. Record your training hours. We issue the certificate you upload with the application.
The PMI-PBA exam
Questions – 200, all multiple choice Scored – 175, with 25 unscored pretest items Time – 240 minutes, four hours Sitting – test center or online with a proctor
What the paper is like
Every question is multiple choice with one right answer. There are no drag-and-drop or hands-on items on this paper, which makes it different from the current PMP. Analysis alone is 35% of the paper — roughly 61 of the 175 scored questions. Weight your study time accordingly.
Scoring, and the numbers PMI keeps back
There is no published passing score for the PMI-PBA, and no published pass rate. PMI holds both back, so any figure you see quoted for either is a guess. You get a pass or a fail, plus a breakdown of how you did in each domain. The official report lands in PMI’s certification system within ten business days.
How to stay PMI-PBA certified?
The clock starts the day you pass, not the day you enroll. Education units have to come from all three sides of PMI’s Talent Triangle. Giving back counts too — volunteering, mentoring, speaking, or working as a professional, which caps at 8. You pay the renewal fee in PMI’s certification system, and PMI does not publish the amount.
