Fundamentals and core concepts
The largest domain on the paper at 36%, and the one everything else is built on: what PMI means by a project, how it says the work should be led, and the vocabulary the questions are written in.- What counts as a project, a program and a portfolio
- The twelve guiding principles and the eight performance domains
- Predictive, agile and hybrid — the three families, and when each fits
- Balancing scope, schedule, cost and quality against each other
- Stakeholders, the sponsor, and where the project manager's authority ends
- PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct
Predictive, plan-based delivery
17% of the paper. The plan-driven half, end to end — and the arithmetic the exam expects you to do rather than recognise.- Organisational structures, and how much power a PM has in each
- The work breakdown structure and control accounts
- Building a schedule, and reading the critical path
- Earned value, and what a cost or schedule variance is telling you
- Quality planning, and the cost of getting it wrong
- Integration management, and the project artefacts that carry it
Agile frameworks and methodologies
20% of the paper. Running an iterative delivery properly — and recognising, in a scenario, which framework the question is describing.- The Agile Manifesto and the principles under it
- Iterations, the product backlog and how scope moves
- Scrum, Kanban, XP and SAFe — the differences that score
- Running a sprint: planning, review, retrospective
- Tracking progress when the plan is meant to change
- Servant leadership and the agile team's roles
Business analysis frameworks
27% of the paper, and the domain most CAPM candidates underestimate. PMI expects a project professional to understand how requirements are found, written and traced.- The business analyst's role alongside the project manager
- Eliciting requirements, and the techniques that work
- Modelling and refining what you have gathered
- The requirements traceability matrix, and what it is for
- Product roadmaps, and acceptance criteria
- How business analysis differs in predictive and adaptive work
Your application and exam day
Everything between finishing the classroom and holding the credential — the part no exam guide covers and the part that stalls most people.- Eligibility: the diploma, the 23 hours, and what counts
- Completing the application, and surviving a PMI audit
- Booking the exam, and how long to leave before you sit
- Reading a scenario question for what it is actually asking
- Full-length mocks, then a domain-by-domain review of your result
Who this is for
Project coordinators and administrators already doing the work without the title. Recent graduates and students heading into project delivery. Newcomers to Canada with project experience but no Canadian credential. Career changers moving into project management from another field.
How to apply
1. Finish your project management education hours. PMI accepts ATP training, college courses, and distance learning with an end-of-course assessment. 2. Create a PMI account and start your CAPM registration. Record every education hour, whenever you earned it. 3. Submit. PMI states registrations are processed in 24 hours or less, unless yours is picked for audit. 4. If audited, send a transcript for your diploma and certificates for your education hours.
The CAPM exam
Questions – 150 in total, 135 scored and 15 unscored pretest items Time – 180 minutes. The optional tutorial and survey sit outside it Break – at a test centre, one 10-minute break after question 75 and your review of that section Question types – multiple choice, drag-and-drop matching, hot spot, animation video, comic strip
How it is scored, and what PMI does not publish
PMI does not publish a passing score. Its handbook says only that the score is set by psychometric analysis, and that the exam is criteria-based. Any percentage quoted for a CAPM pass mark is somebody’s estimate being repeated. You get a report with an overall pass or fail and a per-domain breakdown, whether you passed or not.
How to stay certified?
PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements program governs renewal, and the cycle starts the day you pass. One hour of learning is one PDU. Education and volunteering both count. PDUs you earn for another PMI certification can count toward this one as well. PMI does not publish the renewal fee. It varies by membership and region, and sits behind a my.pmi.org login.
Why apply for the CAPM
The CAPM answers the question a first project management job always asks: can you use the vocabulary and the methods before anyone has let you run anything. It is also a documented on-ramp to the PMP. PMI credits an active CAPM against the PMP’s 35 training hours.
