Program life cycle management
44% of the exam — nearly half the paper sits in this one domain. Definition, delivery and closure of a program, phase by phase.- The program life cycle, and how it differs from a project's
- Program definition: the roadmap and the business case
- Benefit delivery: running the component projects
- Managing the supporting processes across phases
- Program closure, and transitioning what it produced
Stakeholder engagement
16% of the exam. A program manager's stakeholders outsource their authority to nobody — this is influence without control.- Identifying and analysing program stakeholders
- Planning engagement across a multi-year program
- Managing expectations when component projects slip
- Communicating across the component project managers
Strategic program alignment
15% of the exam. Why the program exists, and how you prove it still should.- Aligning the program to organisational strategy
- Building and defending the business case
- Assessing the program's environment and its risks
- Recommending a program be changed or stopped
Governance
14% of the exam. The structures, gates and decisions that sit above a program manager.- Establishing the governance framework
- The governance board, and what it decides
- Phase gates and go/no-go decisions
- Program risk, escalation and reporting
Benefits alignment
11% of the exam, and the domain that most distinguishes a program from a large project.- Identifying and quantifying expected benefits
- The benefits realisation plan
- Measuring benefits during delivery, not only after
- Sustaining benefits once the program closes
Your application, panel review and exam
The panel review sits between your application and the exam, and it is assessed separately.- Eligibility: the months of program experience PMI asks for
- Completing the application, and the PMI audit
- The panel review, and how your responses are assessed
- Booking the exam
- Sample questions, then a domain-by-domain review
How to apply?
1. Check your dates against the 15-year window before you open anything. Overlapping months are the first thing to fix. 2. Open the online application. If you hold an active PMP it skips the project experience section entirely. 3. Write the three experience summaries: Program Strategy, Program Governance and Program Leadership. First person, with named projects and quantified results. 4. Submit. PMI checks the application for completeness, and may select it for audit.
The exam
Questions – 170, of which 150 are scored Time – 240 minutes Unscored – 20 of the 170, placed at random Breaks – none scheduled, and the clock keeps running
How it is scored
PMI does not publish a passing score for the PgMP. Any percentage you find quoted is somebody's guess. It does not publish a pass rate either, for the exam or for the panel review. PMI sets the bar by psychometric analysis against what a qualified program manager should know. Your report comes back as pass or fail, plus diagnostic information on each of the five domains.
Attempts, and changing your date
Your eligibility runs one year from the day you pass the panel review. If the application was audited, it runs from the day the audit clears. Three attempts inside that year, and the second and third mean paying again. Fail all three and you wait a year before reapplying for the PgMP.
How to stay certified?
The cycle runs three years, and the clock starts the day you pass. One hour of learning, teaching, presenting, reading or volunteering equals one PDU. Earn and report all 60 PDUs before the cycle ends, or PMI suspends the credential for twelve months. The renewal fee is separate, and it is due no later than 90 days after your cycle end date.
Why get PgMP certified?
A program is a set of related projects that only deliver their benefits together. The program manager owns the whole set: its governance, its funding and the benefits it promised. The PgMP is PMI's statement that you have run one, assessed by people who have run one. It is not an entry credential. PMI asks for years of program work before it will look at you.
