How hard is the PMP exam, really?

Education Edge · October 16, 2026 · 2 min read

Hard, but mostly in two ways people do not expect: it is long, and most questions ask for a judgement rather than a definition. Prepare for those two things and the exam is far more manageable than its reputation.

Why it feels hard

Most questions describe a project situation and ask what the project manager should do next. Several answers can look reasonable. The best one depends on details in the scenario: who is affected, what has already happened, and whether the team works in a predictive, agile or hybrid way. Memorising terms will not get you there on its own.

What the exam looks like

• 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks

• 10 of the 180 are unscored pretest questions, so 170 decide your result

• People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%

• About 40% predictive, and 60% agile or hybrid

That last line surprises people with years of traditional project experience. More than half of the exam assumes adaptive ways of working.

There is no published pass mark

PMI does not publish a pass rate or a passing score. Your result comes back as a rating in each domain — Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement — not as a percentage. Treat any figure quoted online as an estimate.

If you do not pass first time

Once your application is approved, you have one year to take the exam and up to three attempts within that year. A failed first attempt is a setback, not the end. Our guide to exam windows and retakes explains the rules.

How to make it easier

Practise full-length timed sessions, so four hours is not new on exam day. After every practice question, write down why the right answer beat yours. Study the current exam outline, not an older version of it. Our seven-weekend study plan lays this out week by week.

Education Edge teaches the PMP live over seven Saturdays, 60 hours in all, with a 100% Pass Guarantee — or your money back. See the next course dates.
