The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $102,320 for project management specialists in May 2025. This is a national occupation-level figure, not a starting salary or a promised salary for someone who earns the PMP.
Pay varies with responsibilities, industry, experience, and location. Use a national figure as a starting point, then compare it with roles you could realistically pursue.
Read the number correctly
A median divides reported wages into two halves. It does not mean every project manager earns that amount. BLS also groups jobs under an occupational definition, which may differ from the titles employers use in job advertisements.
Check the data year as well as the publication date. A recently updated article can still describe wages measured in an earlier period.
Build a useful salary comparison
Choose several roles with similar responsibilities in your target location. Record the salary range, experience required, industry, work arrangement, and any certification requirements.
Compare total compensation where information is available. A base salary does not capture bonuses, benefits, retirement contributions, or the cost of commuting. If you are comparing cities, consider living costs and whether the advertised pay depends on where the employee lives.

Where does certification fit?
Some employers request or prefer PMP certification. That can make certification relevant to your job search, but it does not establish that the credential alone causes a particular pay increase.
Evaluate a course against your experience and the roles you want. Certification preparation can support professional development; hiring decisions also depend on your record of delivering work, domain knowledge, communication, and the employer's needs.
Turn the research into a plan
Use the BLS occupational profile for national context, then examine current job descriptions in your target market. Our city-comparison guide explains how to compare local markets without confusing employment totals with vacancies.
If PMP appears regularly in your target roles, check your eligibility before choosing a course.
