PMP eligibility depends on your education, experience leading and managing projects, and project management training. Start with your highest applicable qualification, then check the corresponding experience requirement.
Compare the four routes
Each route below pairs an education level with the project leadership experience PMI requires.
• Secondary school diploma or equivalent — 60 months
• Associate degree or equivalent — 48 months
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent — 36 months
• Bachelor's degree or higher from a PMI GAC-accredited program — 24 months
PMI requires qualifying experience within the applicable ten-year window. The routes also require qualifying project management education, with an active CAPM certification accepted in place of the 35 training hours. Use PMI's current PMP requirements to confirm your route and qualification equivalency.
Build an accurate experience record
Make a list of projects with dates, objectives, your responsibilities, and the person who could verify your involvement. Describe the work you led or managed, rather than copying a job description.
Count elapsed qualifying months carefully. Overlapping projects do not turn one calendar month into several months of experience. If your eligibility is close to a threshold, review the dates before submitting the application.
A job title alone is not enough to settle eligibility. Equally, a title that does not contain “project manager” does not automatically exclude relevant project responsibilities. PMI assesses the experience you document.

Check your education and training evidence
Keep the qualification records needed for your route and the completion details for your training. If you plan to use CAPM to meet the training requirement, check that the certification is active.
Do not assume an international qualification is equivalent to a particular US qualification without checking PMI's requirements. Ask PMI about an unclear case before paying for an exam based on that assumption.
Decide what to do next
If you meet the experience threshold, prepare your application and study plan together. If you do not yet qualify, compare other PMI certification options and consider how to build relevant experience.
